Sing the Music of Hildegard von Bingen as Contemplative Practice

The wisdom of 12th century mystic Hildegard von Bingen dwells in her music, and her teachings come alive whenever we sing her songs. Experience Hildegard’s music the way she shared it with the women and men who sang with her, in a gentle, contemplative process of listening and singing together, through the ear to the heart.

No experience is needed. Open to everyone who enjoys singing.
Suggested offering $10-20. No one turned away for lack of funds. Drop-ins and newcomers always welcome.

Episcopal Church of the Incarnation

Since 2007, we’ve been gathering in the beautiful redwood sanctuary of Episcopal Church of the Incarnation, embraced by the warm resonance of ancient redwood that echoes with more than a century of music and prayer. We meet every Monday night, with a few exceptions during the year. Check the Numina calendar for specific Monday dates, or contact Devi Mathieu at info@singhildegard.com.

Please enter the church campus from the parking lot on Cherry Street. You can visit the directions page for driving directions and a campus map. You will need to enter the nave through the door to the Marian Chapel.

Santa Sabina Center

Since 2011, we’ve been gathering one Tuesday a month at this beautiful retreat center near the Dominican College campus in San Rafael CA. Originally built as a Dominican sisters novitiate, the architecture and resonant acoustics are very similar to the abbeys and churches in which Hildegard sang during her lifetime. For schedule details, visit www.santasabinacenter.org and click on Monthly Offerings.

Additional Information

Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) was a Benedictine Abbess, mystic, visionary, wisdom teacher, composer, singer, author, healer, and spiritual conscience for the patriarchy of her time. Her songs are filled with beautiful melodies and images that deeply nourish heart and soul. By singing her songs, we receive her teachings in much the same way as the women and men she guided during her lifetime.

Devi Mathieu

Devi Mathieu

Devi Mathieu sings medieval and contemporary music in the USA and Europe, offers vocal instruction and coaching, and helps reveal the voices of those who think or have been told they cannot or should not sing. In addition to performing as a soloist in many concert offerings of Hildegard von Bingen’s music, Devi has taught Hildegard’s music, using the medieval oral tradition, since 1996.

Devi has studied with some of the world’s most respected interpreters of medieval music, including Barbara Thornton, Margriet Tindemans, and Karen Clark. She regularly collaborates with composer, author, and pianist William Allaudin Mathieu and with string virtuoso Shira Kammen. Devi and Shira co-direct Vox Flora and Vox Terra, early music ensembles that present medieval sacred music under the auspices of Numina Center for Spirituality and the Arts.

Devi is deeply committed to exploring the common roots from which all human spiritual traditions arise, and to bringing this commonality into contemporary consciousness through song. A student and practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism, American Sufism, and Christian mysticism for more than 30 years, her studies also embrace Judaism, native Middle Eastern traditions, and Eastern European song and dance traditions.
